Hey Folks. It’s been too long since I posted here, so I thought I’d break my fast by posting something a bit meaty. Many moons ago, I created a whitepaper, which is on the Gpoguy portion of this site, that described how and where the various areas in Group Policy stored their settings. I finally, finally got around to updating that for the current in-the-box policy areas that we have today. You can find that updated whitepaper here. In this paper, I talk about how GPOs store their settings, in the GPC or GPT (or both) and where the underlying storage files can be found.
I hope you find this useful!
Darren
Thanks Darren!
Hi Darren, very good and accurate article. Just a question, when you create a GP for Software Installation. When is a published app, you can set a “category” of the app – and from the Configuration Pannel, in the “add/remove software” zone, you can see the list of the apps (published apps) and you can see the different categories. Do you knwo where is store the category information ???
Hey Sylvain-
Yes, they are stored, oddly enough, under CN=AppCategories,CN=Default Domain Policy,CN=System in the domain NC.
