SDM Software Ships GPO Compare Product for spotting GPO inconsistencies

Posted in Cool New Products at 12:58 pm by Administrator

Today we shipped our new GPO Compare 1.0 product. This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while–provide a standalone product to help IT administrators quickly find inconsistencies between GPOs. With GPO Compare, I think we’ve delivered a cool new standalone product with some neat features that you won’t find anywhere else. The first main difference is that we show you each GPO you are comparing in a navigable tree view that looks like the GP Editor namespace. This makes it easy to find settings within a particular GPO. But to make it easier to find differences, we let you jump from a difference item within the difference report right to the spot in the GPO tree view where the setting is found, and then let you jump to the same difference in the other GPO. We also provide reporting so that you can output differences to PDF or Excel for further manipulation and reporting. All-in-all, I’m excited about this product and some of the things we have planned for it down the line.

Check it out and let me know what you think! And have a good weekend!

Microsoft to do PowerShell in Group Policy in Windows 7

Posted in PowerShell at 8:32 am by Administrator

Microsoft’s Group Policy product team recently posted a blog announcing that they will be adding PowerShell support to Windows 7 for various Group Policy management tasks, such as those things you can do in GPMC scripts today. In addition, they are adding PowerShell support for modifying registry policy, which is a good thing, though the approach they are using is not the way I would have done it.

In any event, I think this is good news for Group Policy administrators. Of course, if you want to be able to leverage this today, you can download our free PowerShell GPMC cmdlets for today’s operating systems or take a look at our GPExpert Scripting Toolkit, our commercial product that supports automation against many Group Policy areas, including registry, security, software installation and more.

Join Me This Week at WinConnections!

Posted in General Stuff at 8:37 am by Administrator

This week I’ll be at the Windows Connections show in Las Vegas presenting 5 sessions on Group Policy (what else!) and PowerShell. If you are planning to attend this show, stop by one of my sessions and say hi, or, I will be hosting a GP troubleshooting/management cabana on Wed. the 12th from 5:45-6:30pm on the exhibit hall floor. This is your chance to ask those burning questions about GP that you’ve been trying to get answered! I’ll also be demo-ing some cool SDM Software stuff that we’ve got for GP management, including a very useful new product that is about to ship!
